Strong reading and writing skills are essential for success across every subject. Whether students are preparing for essays and exams, working on research papers, or looking to strengthen clarity and structure, these sessions help build confidence, critical thinking, and stronger academic writing skills.
What We’ll Cover:
• Reading Comprehension & Analysis:
Strengthen close reading skills by learning how to identify key arguments, themes, tone, structure, and supporting evidence across fiction and nonfiction texts.
• Writing Structure & Development:
Improve organization, paragraph structure, thesis development, transitions, and overall clarity to create stronger, more cohesive writing.
• Evidence-Based Writing & RevisionL
Learn how to effectively integrate evidence, strengthen analysis, revise with purpose, and edit for grammar, style, and flow.
Students will leave with clearer writing strategies, stronger analytical skills, and greater confidence approaching academic assignments independently.
Format: 45-minute traditional writing center-style consultation

Location: Palatine Public Library or another agreed-upon location
Includes personalized feedback, revision guidance, and actionable next steps following each session.
Success in higher education requires more than basic comprehension — it requires critical thinking, analytical reading, and confident writing. This small-group course is designed for students preparing for the transition to college, helping them strengthen the core skills needed for ACT success.
What We’ll Cover:
• Surveying & Scanning:
Learn how to identify key ideas, arguments, structure, and supporting details within complex nonfiction texts to improve reading efficiency and comprehension.
• Analysis & Synthesis:
Develop strategies to evaluate arguments, recognize author intent and bias, compare perspectives, and connect multiple ideas across readings.
• Evidence-Based Writing:
Practice crafting clear, analytical, and persuasive written responses using textual evidence, while improving organization, and writing under timed conditions.
Students will strengthen reading comprehension, sharpen analytical writing skills, and build the confidence needed to perform at a higher level on the ACT.
Duration: 3-week program with 60-minute sessions
Schedule: Tuesdays & Thursdays
Location: Palatine Public Library (private study room)
Weekly office hours will also be provided for additional support, guidance, and individualized feedback throughout the program.
The college application process is more than filling out forms, it’s about helping students learn how to tell their story with clarity, confidence, and purpose. This highly personalized course guides students through the college application and essay process, from brainstorming to final submission.
In this course, students will brainstorm, develop, and refine their college essay, Common App responses, and supplemental application materials. Each session includes live feedback, personalized revision guidance, a post-session writing plan, and a downloadable checklist to help maintain momentum throughout the application process.
What We’ll Cover:
• College Application Strategy:
Build a clear application plan, including timelines, school selection, deadlines, and overall positioning throughout the admissions process.
• Personal Statement & Supplemental Essays:
Discover meaningful essay topics, develop strong outlines and first drafts, and craft compelling narratives that feel authentic, thoughtful, and memorable.
• Revision, Voice & Cohesion:
Strengthen structure, clarity, voice, and storytelling through multiple revision cycles while ensuring essays create a unified and compelling application narrative.
Students will leave with polished application materials, stronger writing skills, and greater confidence navigating the college admissions process.
